Carl Cox is a British house and techno record producer and DJ born 29 July 1962 in Oldham, Lancashire, England. His parents, originally from Barbados, introduced him to music when he was really young: at 8 years old, Cox started DJing with their soul albums. Before starting in the electronic music industry, he studied electronic engineering for six months before leaving to become a full-time disc jockey. A complete change of direction, but being passionate about music since childhood, it was expected. Cox became known as one of the best « celebrity DJs » in the world, and he continued to create music, eventually embracing the underground sounds of techno that would soon become very popular.
His music was led by different styles: they vary between disco, rave groove, hip-hop of the 70s-80s. He finally chose to dedicate his music to the British house scene. Now 56 years old, he officially began his career in the mid-1980s as a hardcore techno DJ and rave. Over the years, he definitely found his way into house music. Moreover, he is better known for his radio mixes and shows than for his musical productions.
His popularity rose in 1994 at the Mayday Festival: The Raving Society, where he was mixing. This performance was broadcast by satellite and made him a star in the music world. In 1996, Cox released his first studio album, At the End of the Cliche. Then Phuture 2000 came out in 1999, Second Sign in 2005 and, most recently, All Roads Lead to the dancefloor in 2011.
Throughout his career, he has attended famous clubs such as Shelly’s, Sterns Nightclub, Heaven, Angels, Fuse and Hacienda and owns two labels, Intec Records and 23rd Century Records. Not to mention his presence at several well-known festivals, including the Electric Daisy, Carnival, Tomorrowland, and Ultra Music Festival. For 15 years, from 2001 to 2016, he was a resident at the famous Space club in Ibiza.
It is important to mention that, in 1997, DJ Magazine chose Cox as the first #1 DJ for its first top 100 poll, which to this day still takes place. The same year, he was declared “one of the best DJ of the past 25 years” by Mixmag. He is also known for being the first to work on four or even five turntables at the same time instead of the two standard ones.
Recently, on July 16th 2018, Carl Cox played at CHAMBORD x CERCLE FESTIVAL 2019, in France. Cercle is a livestream media that produces and broadcasts live concerts in atypical venues throughout the world.
